Watson said good-bye to Mr. Stapleton and his sister, and then came back to the manor. Finishing eating his meal, he began to write to tell Holmes about how everything was going there and about the strange brother and sister. He also detailed to him the escaped criminal the police was trying to capture.
In the following days, the manor stayed very quiet. Mr. Stapleton, the biologist, and his sister came to pay a visit to it. His sister was very much concerned about Sir Henry. Henry took much interest in her too. A kind of affection flew out of their hearts. From the time they first met each other, Henry tried to find excuses to see the brother and sister almost everyday. Everybody thought Stapleton would be very glad if Henry would marry Miss Stapleton. But the fact was Mr. Stapleton had a strong aversion to his sister's love affair. When Henry tried hard to get a chance to make an offer of marriage to Miss Stapleton, her brother unexpectedly appeared and arbitrarily stopped them. Later Mr. Stapleton explained that his sister meant everything in his life. He had been very lonely. His sister was his only companion. Therefore he couldn't lose his sister. Such remarks were quite baffling.
